Yesterday in an interview with radio talk show host Michael Medved, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee went on ad nauseum about why the SCHIP program (State Children’s Health Insurance Program) needed to be reformed and how this should be a major part of the next Republican (presidential) candidate's campaign.
I guess Mr. Huckabee hasn’t read Rick Shenkman’s book “Just How Stupid Are We?”. According to Shenkman, only 2 out of 5 Americans can name the three branches of government, 1 in 7 can find Iraq on a map, and only 1 in 5 know there are 100 U.S. senators. If any candidate brings up SCHIP in the next election, they will not only lose their viewers, but their votes as well. When will these people learn the first rule of communication, “know your audience.”
Reagan and W. knew it, as did Barack Obama, and these were arguably the three most successful Presidential candidates in the last 30 years. In 1980, Reagan was accused of dumbing down his message to what would fit on a bumper sticker. Obama has been accused by many, including myself, of resorting to simplistic slogans like “Change” and “Yes we can.” Well these people knew what H.L Mencken preached more than 50 years ago, ”Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.”
Sad to say but at least half the people in this country are ignorant, if not stupid. According to Shenkman, “ Americans pay less attention to political issues, they understand less about pressing issues than the voters of the 1940's, and are much more susceptible to comforting bumper-sticker slogans and raw emotional appeals.” Based on the results of the last eight elections, he’s right. The proof of the pudding is in the votes. In the current climate anyone spouting off about "SCHIP", will have viewers thinking their discussing Intel’s latest innovation.
If Republicans want to win, they need to put forth their platform in the simplest possible terms and quit sounding like policy wonks, give up the inside the beltway speak, and learn to communicate with those listening. Statements like, “it’s your money not governments” resonate. Until they get back to basics, they will continue to lose election after election. By the way, the spell checker on my word processor didn't recognize “ad nauseum". Point made.
